Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you might want to know about custom projects, repurposed pieces, caring for handmade garments, and joining the ReSew Creative collective.

What types of garments can be repurposed?+
Many garments can become something new: wedding dresses, shirts, denim, coats, dresses, uniforms, quilts, and other meaningful textiles. A maker will assess the fabric, condition, construction, and your idea to recommend a beautiful, practical next step. Some materials may be too fragile or unsuitable for a particular design, and we will explain that honestly.
How does a custom project begin?+
Start by submitting the custom project inquiry at /custom. Tell us what you are imagining, what you would like transformed, and any important dates or preferences. We will review your note and follow up to discuss feasibility, materials, measurements, timing, and next steps before any work begins.
What measurements or materials are needed?+
The details depend on the project, but useful starting information includes the intended wearer's measurements, preferred fit, desired colors, and inspiration images. If you are providing fabric or a garment, include clear photos and a description of its size and condition; do not mail irreplaceable materials until the project has been discussed and accepted. Your maker will provide a tailored measurement and materials checklist.
Can customers provide their own heirloom fabric?+
Yes—customer-provided heirloom fabric can make a project especially personal. We will first discuss its condition, quantity, sentimental importance, and the intended design so expectations are clear. Please keep the original item until we confirm the project details and shipping instructions in writing.
How are custom prices determined?+
Custom pricing reflects the design complexity, labor, pattern work, fittings, materials, special techniques, and finishing required. Shipping, rush requests, or additional alterations may affect the final total. After learning about your project, we will provide the next pricing step and confirm the scope before work begins.
What is the expected timeline?+
Timelines vary by project, maker availability, material condition, number of fittings, and the season. Wedding and event projects should be discussed as early as possible, with your date included in the inquiry. We will share an estimated schedule before accepting the project and communicate promptly if anything changes.
Do you offer alterations or repairs?+
Yes, makers in the ReSew Creative collective may offer alterations and repairs, from fit adjustments to thoughtful mending. Availability depends on the garment, technique, condition, and maker location. Send an inquiry with photos, the changes you need, and your preferred deadline so we can assess the best route.
Do you ship?+
Shipping availability and cost depend on the product, maker, destination, and whether the item is ready-made or custom. Each product listing and project conversation will clarify fulfillment details before purchase or approval. For marketplace purchases, the individual crafter is responsible for packing and shipping their product as described in the applicable terms.
What are the return and refund policies?+
Please review the current Marketplace Terms of Service at /tos before purchasing. Because products are one-of-a-kind and custom work is made for an individual, eligibility can differ between ready-made items, custom projects, and alterations; the applicable policy will be confirmed at the relevant stage. If something arrives damaged or differs materially from its description, contact us with your order details and photos so we can help.
How should customers care for handmade garments?+
Follow the care instructions included with your item, and when in doubt choose gentle handling: cool water, mild detergent, low agitation, and air-drying away from direct heat or harsh sunlight. Some vintage, embellished, dyed, or delicate fabrics may require hand-washing or professional cleaning. A maker can advise on the specific materials used in your piece.
How are memory bears handled sensitively?+
Memory bears are made from clothing or textiles that carry meaning, so we handle each item with care and respect. We discuss the source materials, desired number and style of bears, any keepsake details, and what should happen to unused fabric before cutting. Because sentimental textiles can be irreplaceable, the project plan and handling expectations are confirmed before work begins.
What happens after submitting an inquiry?+
You will receive an automated confirmation email letting you know your inquiry was received. A maker or ReSew team member will review the details and follow up with questions, feasibility, an estimated timeline, and the next step. An inquiry is not a booking or obligation until the scope and terms are agreed.
Are all ReSew pieces made by the same person?+
ReSew Creative operates as a curated collective of independent sewing crafters—a collective, not a factory. The product listing or project conversation identifies the responsible maker, and each crafter manages their own product quality, communication, fulfillment, and customer experience. We bring their work together under one thoughtful marketplace.
Can I request a specific maker or design style?+
You are welcome to share a preferred maker, aesthetic, color palette, silhouette, or inspiration. We will consider the request alongside skill, availability, location, materials, and project fit. If the requested maker is unavailable, we may suggest another member of the Sewing Circle whose work suits your idea.
Can I buy a one-of-a-kind piece without commissioning a custom project?+
Browse the catalog at /catalog for ready-made handmade, repurposed, and upcycled pieces. Product pages contain the available details; because each item is unique, check measurements, materials, care information, and fulfillment notes before purchasing.
How can sewing crafters join the collective?+
Makers can learn about the marketplace model and apply through /crafters. Tell us what you make, your techniques and materials, and share a portfolio or social link if available. ReSew reviews applications for fit and follows up about possible next steps; submitting an application does not guarantee acceptance.
